All of Josephine’s paintings are done as ‘contacted paintings’ - meditating the inner contact or inner power to flow into the painting as it is being created. When finished, the painting is fully and ritually consecrated in the traditional magical adept method (made sacred) to enable power and contact to flow through it.

The Empress

The Empress is part of an ancient line of priestess queens who protected the land and the people, brought growth and renewal, prosperity, and safety to all around her.
Steeped in magic of the Stars, Serpents and the Underworld, the Empress drives out the rotten, the wicked, the degenerate and the evil, and she rules with a duel force of mercilessness and true compassion.
She is sister to the Jinn, mother to the people, guardian of the land, and ruler of the winds.
The painting was created on art paper using watercolour Gouache and gold leaf.

A magical experiment -
The following three paintings are on small canvas. I wanted to see if I could magically work on a small canvas but also bring through some of the powers that went into previous paintings, particularly the powers that flow through the Mystagogus deck. I wanted people to have access to original magical paintings that were not hundreds of dollars, and were small enough to fit in most home spaces, and that would work as magical windows or talismans.
These three started out as very different paintings to bring through different powers, but the power of Sanctuary pushed hard to come through in each painting. So here they are!

Sanctuary:Beauty of the Deep

The Hermit stands on an outcrop and drinks in the beauty and silence of the cave - their retreat from the noise of the modern world.
The magical energy of peace and sanctuary went into the painting - it is one of three where the same power with some variant went into the paintings.

The Mage stands in the peace and sanctuary of a deep cave and watches the light of the day filter through the cave entrance. A place of Sanctuary in a crazy destructive world.

Sanctuary: Splendour

After hours of climbing, the Magician stands on the threshold of a vast cave with water cascading down into the darkness. The Magician’s heart is bursting with the feeling of Splendour, vastness, the joy of the clean water and the Sanctuary that the cave gives. That power of awe within Sanctuary went into the painting as a magical energy.

Presences – The Gathering

As the viewer looks through the west gate up into the stars, the ancestral/land-spirits stand in the north, down the centre flows the Divine unknowable presence, and to the south stand the angelic beings that form the future. Beyond them stands the goddess of the winds; she is resting and is pregnant. Her silence and stillness ‘holds back’ the most terrible of winds.

The Tenth Gate by Josephine McCarthy june 24
The Tenth Gate of the Duat/Underworld as the sun is about to pass through it. To the right is a seated female figure who is only partly shown, who seems to be a part of the rock throne she is sat on. Her name is Hallowed Place - she is the goddess of this ‘hour’ in the Underworld, and guarding the gate is Glister, the serpent who ‘Glistens’… though for this painting she wanted to be blue…..From the Book of the Gates, 10th hour: Now he makes bright the original darkness, he gives light for the Hidden region, so says Sia.

The Divine Water of Life is closely linked to Truth (Maat), and in the Underworld it is guarded by the Serpents of the Goddess.
Consecrated with traditional magical utterance, it is the power of cleansing, truth, renewal and the stars. Hidden in the Underworld, the sacred waters stay protected until it is time once again for them to surface in our world.
